Looking for a quick read? Love graphic novels? Try Drama by Raina Telgemeier. Through great illustrations, Telgemeier tells the story of Callie, a seventh grade student who loves the theater. When her middle school decides to put on the show Moon Over Mississippi, Callie discovers that the production of the show will cause much more drama than she thought possible. Between her new dream job as set designer, dealing with the actors having trouble working together, and misunderstandings between friends, Callie has a lot to deal with. Add in two new students and a new crush and Callie has discovered the recipe for real Drama!
Callie’s story in Drama is relatable and funny. Telgemeier makes sure to talk about understanding others through Callie’s successes and misunderstandings between friends as well as time management with Callie’s responsibility as a set designer. Any middle school student will be able to relate to either or both of these struggles that Callie must overcome in the novel. Telgemeier also has Callie meet people from different backgrounds than herself which might provide readers with an introduction into what different people might be like if they do not have the opportunity to meet them in their own life.
With the graphic novel format and the enjoyable storytelling, Drama is a quick read. Although it may look like a long book, do not be fooled by the page number! (Just so you know, it is 233 pages.) This reader took an hour and a half to finish the story cover to cover. If that is not a quick read, I don’t know what is. Based on this quick read time and the story’s relatability, Drama earns its spot as a go to graphic novel for middle grade readers.
